Social networking is a daily part of life for millions of people in America and around the world. Many argue that social networking plays a large role in spreading democratic values. Social networking sites are often used as an easy place to “get out the vote”. More recently, especially in the past election, candidates used social networking sites to interact with people and try to get as many people to vote as possible. Some say that this allows the average person to interact more with the candidate and that it creates more transparency. However, some others point out that they do not largely contribute to the spread of democratic values since young voters often have the lowest turnout, and are not even on these social networking sites the most. So, what role, if any, do social networking sites play in the spread of democratic values?
